The Danger of Opinions

I saw a quote this morning that stuck a chord in my Spirit. The quote said, “Stop asking everyone else’s opinion… ask God what HE THINKS!”

Proverbs 11:14 (NLT) says, “Without wise leadership, a nation falls; there is safety in having many advisers.” I have people in my life whom I trust implicitly to give me wise, insightful counsel when it comes to matters of my heart and decisions I need to make for my future. However, there is a major difference in seeking wise counsel and listening to the danger of opinions.

Wise counsel seeks the face of God on a consistent basis in prayer, intercession and fasting. Those who provide wise counsel have what I call a “God-connection”, which means they can remove their emotions, and how they feel about you personally so they can hear directly from Heaven concerning your situation and provide scripture-based insight, illumination and revelation that will help you make the best decision for where God is leading.

By definition, an opinion is “a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.” Why, then, would I choose to base any life-altering or important decision on the judgment and advice offered by someone who does not have any or all of the facts or knowledge necessary to make an informed decision about my situation? People may have the very best intentions if they care about you and genuinely love you; however, people are also flawed and may be emotionally driven, so listening to their opinions can quickly lead us outside of the will of God. Jeremiah 17:9 (NLT) says, The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? People and their opinions are also incapable of seeing at God’s level of foresight and what He has planned for your future, nor do they know what you will encounter in the days ahead on your journey. Our human perspective is limited, so without properly seeking the direction of God, any advice offered from our own human idea of reason and reality will be nothing short of simplistic and reckless.

When the Lord gives you a dream, vision, purpose, plan, or desire in your heart, it is imperative that you pray for wisdom regarding wise counsel to share what God has given you. Wise counsel who will cover those things with you in prayer and watch over it with you until the Lord brings it to manifestation. It is equally as important that you guard it from the opinions of all others. Opinions will cause you to question the validity and authenticity of what God said. Opinions can plant seeds of doubt, despair and make you turn back to what God told you to leave. Listening to the opinions of others can cause you to forfeit your destiny and the blessings that God desires for your future. Opinions will kill the seeds of your harvest while it is still covered and planted in what was meant to be good soil.

If you are like me, the most important thing in life is to make decisions that will please God. In this season, I have been so careful not to make decisions until and unless I am absolutely certain that the Lord has led and confirmed His will for that particular thing. What I have learned about the Lord over the years is that He delights in our asking for wisdom. He literally waits for us to come to Him, and it is His pleasure to lavish the gift of wisdom generously upon us when we ask for it. James 1:5 (NLT) tells us, If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” He will make it so clear, plain, and concise that you cannot mistake what you should do.

Isaiah 46:10 (NLT) says, "Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish." Why not take a moment to talk to the only One Who has FULL ACCESS to every single detail of what lies ahead on the path of your life to determine what to do and what decision is best?
