I love the start of something new. I get excited when I can turn in my current model phone and upgrade it for something new. Part of the fun is discovering what that new phone can do and learning the new features. Finding out all the potential that piece of technology holds always fascinates me. That is the draw about new things. New things are filled with potential. New things are filled with promise. New things are filled with limitless possibility and so much to discover.
August is the eighth month of our calendar year, with the number “8” representing “new beginnings”. Because of this, I have always viewed the month of August as being the perfect month for a fresh start.... the perfect time for a new beginning. When you hear the words “new beginning”, what comes to mind? One definition of the word new is “discovered now for the first time”. (“new,” n.d.) The word beginning means “the point in time or space at which something starts”. (“beginning,” n.d.)
There’s a passage of scripture in Isaiah 43 that speaks to the new thing the Lord is doing. I have often read the scripture about seeing the new thing, but let’s take a look at what the Lord said before that:
“I am the Lord, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator and King. I am the Lord, who opened a way through the waters, making a dry path through the sea. I called forth the mighty army of Egypt with all its chariots and horses. I drew them beneath the waves, and they drowned, their lives snuffed out like a smoldering candlewick. “But forget all that— it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” - Isaiah 43:15-19 (NLT)
The Lord first reminds His children of the mighty acts He had done before, and then tells them to FORGET about those incredible, mighty things. Why? Because He is about to do something far greater than what they had already seen! He is still doing the same for us. He is beckoning us to discover right now for the first time all that He is depositing in our hearts, our minds and our Spirits. He desires to set those things in motion at this appointed time.
If the definition of a new beginning is our chance to discover for the first time the point in time or space at which something starts. Why not start now? What are you discovering about yourself or your life right now for the first time that you desire to start at this point in time? There is no greater moment to seek the heart of our Heavenly Father and allow Him to sing over us as we step into our new beginning.
Thank You for the gift of new beginnings. Thank You for brand-new mercies. Thank You for offering us the privilege of discovering things in our lives for the first time that You desire to use for Your glory to bless Your people. Help us to surrender, submit and yield to all that You are speaking into our lives. Help us to be obedient to Your call as You reveal Your sweet, precious plans for our lives. Let us seize this moment to take Your hand and walk with You at this point in time with courage, confidence and security. We honor You and love You.
In Jesus’ Name... Amen.
